Motorhome or Travel Trailer?

Purchasing an RV can be a major financial investment, and the decision to buy brings up a lot of questions – the first of which is “motorhome or travel trailer?” If you’re stumped and can’t seem to make up your mind, you’ve come to the right article! I’ve compiled a list of ownership pros and cons for both the motorhome and travel trailer. Keep in mind that both are great options and that it all depends on your needs and wants. Let’s go!

Agua Dulce Storage travel trailer

The Upfront Cost

There is a huge price difference between the motorhome and the travel trailer. We’re going to assume we’re comparing a new motorhome with a new travel trailer or a used motorhome with a used travel trailer. With this comparison, a class C motorhome will most likely cost two times the average cost of a travel trailer. Generally speaking, travel trailers are significantly lower in cost than motorhomes. However, though travel trailers are more affordable than motorhomes, travel trailers are dependent upon a vehicle. The ideal vehicle would most likely be a truck.

Agua Dulce Storage motorhome

Ongoing Maintenance

As you’d expect, the ongoing maintenance of a class C motorhome tend to be higher than a travel trailer. The simple reason for the price difference is because the motorhome has both the RV components and the vehicle components such as the engine and etc. Depending on how often you use the motorhome the cost of maintenance can cost anywhere between $50-$200 dollars per month. Whereas the travel trailer can cost anywhere between $1-$50 dollars a month, give or take.

Cost of Gasoline

When it comes to the cost of gasoline, it largely depends on the size of the motorhome as well as the cost of fuel. When comparing a class C motorhome with a truck towed travel trailer the motorhome would be more fuel efficient.

Depreciation and Vehicle Resale Value

Vehicles, in general, are not good investments because once it leaves the sales lot, the vehicle beings to depreciate. However, when we look at travel trailers, you may experience a slower depreciation because it doesn’t have an engine or various vehicle parts.

Travel Frequency

How often do you plan on hitting the road? Are you planning on traveling full-time or part-time? These are important questions to maximize your investment as well as your decision. If you plan on traveling part-time during the weekends or during annual vacations, it may be a big investment for a motorhome if it’s only going to be used a few weeks out of the year.

Driving Experience

When it comes to the all-in-one class C motorhome, driving is a lot more comfortable and less stressful. The motorhome is relatively easier to drive than pulling the travel trailer with a truck. One key difference between the motorhome and the travel trailer is the driving speed. When making corner turns or driving downhill, it’s a bit stressful for travel trailers since you’ll have to consider both the truck as well as the trailer.

Living Space and Storage

The class C motorhome will have a smaller and more confined living quarters than the travel trailer. One major decider between the two is the average number of passengers you’ll be housing during your trips. If space is a concern, I’d recommend visiting a local RV dealership to get a better size idea.

Tips to Consider for a Memorable Road Trip

It’s about that time of the year to pull your RV out of storage, pack your friends and hit the open road!

Agua Dulce Storage sign

There’s nothing quite like wind blowing through your hair as you cruise down Route 66 in your RV. Or facing the open road and getting lost in thought with the surrounding scenery. There’s also something amazing about road trips that invoke a sense of freedom and excitement. It’s also a great way to gain a new perspective and a deeper appreciation of oneself. So before we dive right into the trip, there are a few things to consider before we set our sights on the open road. As most RV travelers would say, “preparation is key to any successful road trip.” Read on for a few ways you can ensure a memorable road trip.Agua Dulce Storage map

The Plan

There are typically two types of road trip plans: the detailed plan and the vague plan. Depending on whichever plan you’re looking to partake, it’s important that everyone onboard has the same expectation. You wouldn’t want unnecessary drama to abrupt during the trip. An example of a detailed plan consists of having a set schedule for both departure and arrival along with proper campsite reservations booked far in advance. An example of a vague plan would consist of multiple spontaneous pit stops along the trip. In short, a vague plan is basically winging it as you go with the destination in mind.

The RV

A successful road trip is only as good as your RV. So before you set your sights on the open road, be sure to double check the condition of your rig. What I mean by this is to check the health of your RV before you set out on your adventure. Keep in mind; you’re most likely going to put in a couple hundred miles on your RV if not more. So definitely consider double checking your engine oil, tire pressure, lights, battery, and brakes to name a few. In case of a flat tire or an unexpected engine occurrence, always make sure you have a functioning spare tire, jumper cables, and tools if you know your way around an engine.

The Food

Ah yes! The most important part of the entire trip! Depending on the number of passengers, you’re already looking at a pretty packed RV. When an RV has limited storage space like this, it’s going to take a certain level of creativity to figure out additional storage space. Fortunately, there are easy storage hacks you can do to maximize your space. If you got soda cans or canned foods, one of the best methods save space is to use storage bins or corrals to help uniformly store circular items. Another iffy storage hack is to use the inside of cabinet doors to hang spices or small lightweight items.

Boredom Busters

Being together in a confined space for hours on end will eventually drive you mad! So brace yourselves for boredom! But don’t worry you won’t be suffering from boredom alone, whether it’s with friends or family you’re all going to be bored of out your minds together! Rather than going mad together, why not play the singing game! It’s where one person starts singing the first line of the song and the next person has to continue it! Another game is the movie game, where one person names an actor or actress and the next person has to name a movie they were in.

The Right Time to Travel in Your Recreational Vehicle (RV)

If you’re like most people, you’re probably working at a location-dependent job. If this is the case, you’re likely in a weekly rinse and repeat work cycle. Most people will understand this feeling to a degree because they’re either living it right now or have experienced it. So when exactly will you have the freedom to travel? Sorry to break it to you but there is no “right time” to travel. Before we begin this article, I’d like to share one of my favorite inspirational quotes.

“There’s never a right time to travel in our lives. When we’re young, we have the energy and time, but not the means. When we are middle-aged, we have the means and the energy, but not the time. When we are old, we have the time and the means, but not the energy.”

This quote puts life in perspective and helps you realize that no matter when we decide to travel in our lives, there’s always going to be some kind of sacrifice. If you’re young, you’d have to be willing to take financial risks. If you’re middle-aged with a family, you’d have to risk your job security. Lastly, when you’re old you run the risk of your physical well-being. There isn’t a “right time” to travel. However, your Recreational Vehicle (RV) might be a possible solution to this dilemma.

map-2562138_960_720

When it comes to packing up your life and hitting the open road in your RV, there are a few reasons why it isn’t for everyone. In fact, the RV life was only known and seen for those who were retired. Nowadays, people of all ages can become full-time RV go-getters. This is only made possible by the ever-growing demand of the internet. This new job demand helped create new jobs that weren’t available back then but are now. They enabled people of all working ages to self-sustain themselves on their RV traveling adventures. The once known “RV dream” to retirees is now possible for those willing to accept this lifestyle.

geography-2561674_960_720

A study was conducted by the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) to determine the typical age of RV owners in the US. The study concluded that the age bracket fell between the ages of thirty-five (35) and fifty-four (54). In other words, we’re looking at a new era of traveling and living. So how do we make a living when traveling? Well, one of the best methods of funding your traveling expenses is free-lance jobs. The best part about these free-lance jobs is that it only requires internet access. Nowadays you can easily equip and install an internet source to your rig.

travel-2650303_960_720

One of the most versatile types of jobs out there that allow for a steady income while traveling in an RV is telecommuting home-based type jobs. To name just a few, there’s web design, photographer, software engineer, and writer. All these positions can be performed remotely in the comfort of your RV. Aside from telecommuting type jobs, there are other job positions out there that require you to travel the distance to the work itself. These types of work are typically within the engineering and construction industry. For example, you might be located 3 to 6 months away from home. Some of these travel type job positions include field technicians, geologist, consultant, and environmental specialist to name a few. Lastly, there are Temporary Staffing Agencies that can help find you a suitable job for your traveling expenses. These positions are typically seasonal jobs. For example, Amazon usually hires a large number of seasonal workers to help package orders during the Christmas rush.

RV traveling has slowly evolved over the years with the advancement of technology. Regardless of how advanced technology may become in the distant future, there will always be a time and place where sacrifices are tested. Remember, life is filled with decisions and risks. Are you ready to make the decision to pull your RV out of storage and take that risk?

RV Storage at Home vs. Storage Facility

Before we dive right in, I want to be completely transparent and one hundred percent honest with you guys: in this comparison, I’m most likely going to be biased in favor of storage facilities. Frankly, because I, myself use a storage facility. With that said, this comparison will be strictly composed of my own personal experience as well as my own opinion about home storage versus a storage facility.

Let’s get started! RV storage facilities provide an easy solution for people who want to enjoy an adventurous lifestyle without the hassle of sacrificing their garage space. Although many people have managed to store their RV’s at home, there are some unique features that a storage facility offers that our homes most likely does not. Here is my list of reasons.

Agua Dulce Storage map

More Room

Generally speaking, storing an RV at home can be a little tricky. Depending on the size of your RV or the size of your garage, you may face some difficulties such as not having a big enough garage or backyard. For the average RV owner, most household garages are not built to store our RVs. However, most households do have a big enough backyard to park their RV. Now there is an alternative parking solution and that would be to park in your driveway. But that is of course if you don’t mind parking in and out of the driveway every single day. And if you’re wondering if you could Street Park, think again! There’s a homeowners association that doesn’t allow RV street parking.

More Security

Before we get into this topic, I’m not implying that your home isn’t safe or secure. I’m just saying that storage facilities are designed for security and they pride themselves on protecting their tenant’s assets. Whereas at home, any security measures you want taken are entirely up to you. At a storage facility, you’ll most likely receive a few if not all of these features such as an electronic passcode for your unit, security cameras, locked gates, individual unit security alarms, and even on-site staff to keep an eye on things while you’re away. Now, these are just a few of the features that a storage facility has to offer.

More Protection

As an RV owner, I can say with the utmost confidence that RVs are pretty sturdy and are built to withstand most elements. However, even the mightiest can fall when they’re not properly maintained or protected. This is especially true when we’re talking about our RVs. Depending on our geographical location, we may be more susceptible to high humidity, rainfall, snow or various other extreme elemental concerns. I highly recommend using a storage facility during the off-season such as winter if you live in a colder region. Protect your RV from the elements with an in-door storage unit. Now to be fair, an in-door storage unit is a bit pricier but the investment is well worth it in the long run.

Agua Dulce Storage bike

Like many of us, we only whip out our RVs from our storage facility or from our backyard when we plan on going on an adventure. Generally speaking, my family and I only travel to a handful of our favorite destinations every few months or so. Needless to say, RV owners have the opportunity to explore new places without spending a lot of money on travel expenses while enjoying a level of comfort similar to their own home.

Understand Your Recreational Vehicle

Believe it or not, there are lots of people still discovering a new thing or two about the RV that they’ve owned for years. With that said, especially for RV beginners who have little to no road experience, you should definitely take the time to learn how your recreational vehicle works. The angles when you turn, getting comfortable of the size, the distance before hitting the brakes — all these little know-hows are critically important to not only your safety but the safety of your friends and family. If you know anything about RVs, then you know that there are a lot of features. Depending on what RV you have, you might have features that can enable you to do certain things you haven’t thought of before.

Take Your Recreational Vehicle for a Test Drive

As obvious as this may sound, like most vehicles it’s important to get familiar with how your RV operates. This is especially important if you’re a RV beginner because you will face obstacles you haven’t faced before. Once simple solution to better prepare yourself for when the time comes to driving is to plan on where your destination is located and research the terrain it’ll be in. Once you figure out the scope, you can prepare yourself by driving a few test drives. Keep in mind; the terrain you’re in and the speed you’re driving to the turns you make will affect the people inside the RV. If there are unsecured items in the RV and you make a sharp turn, you can expect the living area to be a mess. These are the little things to consider when you’re driving your RV for the first time, be wary of the items and passengers on board as you’re driving.

Prepare Your Recreational Vehicle Before You Venture Off

Like most success in life, preparation is key. Always expect the unexpected; this famous line rings especially true for RV goers. Be sure to pack a well-stocked tool kit for your RV such as light bulbs, jumper cables, extra fuses, nuts, bolts and parts that are specifically unique to your RV. Aside from the RV’s functions, there are other preparations to be made such as having an adequate supply of living essentials in your living areas.

Plan Out Your Weekend Getaway Before Hopping in Your Recreational Vehicle

Having a solid plan is a great way to ensure a fun-filled weekend. One of the most important RV plans to keep in mind is the budget. How much can you allocate for fun and for food? In other words, how much money can you spend eating out versus making sandwiches as an alternative food source.

There’s also the route you’re taking to reach your destination. Plan the quickest route or take a few detours for sightseeing, there’s just a lot of variables that could go into planning a simple RV trip weekend, especially if you’re an RV beginner.

Make a Campground Checklist for Your Recreational Vehicle

Knowing where you’ll plan to stay the night is important. As a RV beginner, chances are you might not have a campground routine yet. Therefore, by creating a checklist will help ensure that you’re RVing like a pro. Your checklist should include checking the site locations if there are hanging branches or obstacles on the ground that may hamper your overnight camp. Another tip to mention is to secure your RV’s wheels by locking them so it remains stationary throughout the night.

Summer 2017 Water Activities While Boating

Summer 2017 Water Activities While Boating

Now that summer is in full swing, it’s time to take your boat out for a ride (if you haven’t done so already!). Take your boat out of self-storage to the nearest body of water for some good summer fun. There are so many water activities that you and your family or friends can do while boating. Especially if one person prefers to fish and another prefers to swim, there are so many activities that you can do while boating to keep everyone entertained for the day. Here is a list of recommended water activities to do while boating this summer.

Snorkeling_diving

Snorkeling

This is a great way to explore the sea while exercising! Take your boat out off the coast line and begin your snorkeling adventures alongside the various sea creatures below. Allow your inner adventurer out while snorkeling and see the wonders of the ocean. To document and share your adventure with your friends and family take a waterproof camera with you to capture experience under the sea. If you’re lucky, you’ll even be able to make a new ocean friend or better yet you might even find Nemo and maybe even Dory.

swimming_in_the_sea

Swimming

Take a dip into still water to cool off! If you are boating on a lake and the current is still and safe, we recommend jumping in! Swimming in a lake or the ocean will keep you cool and if you do swimming laps around your boat, you will get a good cardio exercise! If you are boating in the ocean, make sure there are no dangers of sharks in the water and if the waters appear safe, you can jump on in for some swimming fun.

Tubing

If you want to go out onto the waters but don’t want to submerge yourself completely, tie a water tube to your boat and enjoy the drifting around under the sun. Water tubes will keep you cool while you bask in the sun and float atop the waters. They are inflatable water apparatuses that come in all shapes and sizes, including the donut rings and chairs. Whatever your preference, you can always tie a string from the boat to your floating apparatus so you don’t float too far away from the boat.

Feet_Over_The_Edge

Water Skiing

If you have a boat with the horsepower h2 enough, you could water ski out on the waters. You just need the power to pull someone up and keep the speed manageable for the rider. Many 24’ boats are fast enough to pull a skier behind them, though the acceleration might be slow at first. Lighter and smaller boats tend to accelerate faster, so a boat smaller than 24’ would work for water skiing. Water skiing equipment can be found at your local sporting store or you can find all of the equipment online.

fishing_boating_Kid

Fishing

Fishing is always a great activity to do while boating, especially if certain family members or friends prefer fishing over the other water activities mentioned. You can catch your dinner fishing or simply enjoy the sun while you wait for a bite. There are some people who enjoy catching fish as a game while others catch fish for fun by returning them back into the waters. Whatever your preference, know that fishing is a great way to pass the time while boating. Just be sure your friends and family isn’t in the waters when you’re trying to score a bite. With that said apply lots of sun screen and stay hydrated while you do so!

CLEANING UP THE BOAT

After a fun filled day under the sun it’s about that time to take your boat out of the water. You will want to clean the hull and windows before parking your boat in storage. Cleaning up the dirt and residue will help preserve your boat and help keep it in good condition. Remember to wipe down the hull and windows with a mixture of water and dishwater soap or you can use a microfiber rag to wipe down the boat. Just remember however you choose to clean your boat is entirely up to you but we can all agree that wiping away excess mud and gunk will help prolong the beauty of the hull.

Summer RV Travel Adventures

With the sun shining bright against the blue skies, it’s the perfect weather to take your RV on an adventure this summer. Road trips to national parks, beaches, and the mountains make for a promising fun time camping. Traveling with an RV allows you to bring all the comforts of home while sightseeing. An RV is the best methods of traveling across the United States to see the various national monuments and historical sites. Most national parks and campsites allow for RV parking so get your RV out of storage this summer and travel!

Preparing Your RV for Summer Fun

It is important to inspect your RV carefully before heading out on your summer road trip. Generally, the first order of business is to do a walk through on the outside and inside of your RV to check for structural damages. Structural damages occur due to weather elements causing unexpected damage.

Check the Water System

One of the next things you can do is to prepare the RV watering system for travel, especially if antifreeze was applied to the water supply prior to placement the RV in storage. To clear out the antifreeze from the entire water system, you need to run the water until all traces of it have been removed. Antifreeze is generally a bright neon color to help distinguish it from water, such as neon blue or neon green. Run the water in the shower and sink and flush the toilet until all of the antifreeze disappears from the water. In general you should always drain and refill the fresh water tanks before any travel, even if you didn’t place antifreeze in the water supply. Take note that if you placed the water heater in bypass mode to put it back into play for traveling use. Don’t forget to check your water filters and replace as needed!

Check the Battery

Check your battery for your RV and make sure it’s in tip top shape before heading off on the road. If you don’t feel comfortable with working on the battery, you can have an on-call automotive technician visit your RV to help perform battery maintenance. Keep in mind that batteries that are in storage without use will discharge between 10-15% of energy each month. Many choose to remove the battery from the engine and keep the RV battery stored in the garage during the winter. Either way, certain precautions need to be taken to ensure the RV battery is fully charged before driving off. The first thing is to fully charge the battery and the only reliable way to do this is to use a multi-stage battery charger, such as a Battery Tender. Once your battery is fully charged, make sure your water levels in the battery are full and equal. You must use distilled water to refill the battery’s cells. If your battery is weak and the water is below the plates then do not fill the water to the top in the cells because the electrolyte level will rise and there needs to be space for this during charging of the battery.

Check the Appliances and Generator

You need to check the LP gas cylinders to make sure they are running smoothly. You can test the water heater tank to see if the LP gas appliance is working efficiently—if the water gets hot, it is working. If the water does not get hot after several moments, something is wrong with the LP gas appliance. You can have it inspected at an RV and automotive service facility because if it is leaking gas, that is very dangerous. If the LP gas appliance seems to be working fine, then also check the various appliances around the RV including the microwave, the refrigerator, and the roof air conditioner. You can do electrical testing to make sure these appliances are receiving the proper electrical input or you can take it to an automotive shop and they will test the electrical output for you to make sure your RV appliances are in tip top shape for the road. Also make sure the oil levels in your generator are fine, as well as ensure the generator’s exhaust system is running in tip top shape. One way to preserve the generator is by using it while your RV is storage to keep it performing well. You can always take your generator to an automotive service facility to have it double checked, as the generator is essential for any RV trip.

Having Fun On The Road With Kids

Once you have prepared your RV structurally for the road, you need to them stock up the RV with toiletries, food, clothes, sleeping necessities, electronics and toys. If you are traveling with kids, you will definitely need to keep in mind activities for the kids to do while on the road.

Keep Them Reading!

Whether your kid is reading comic books or novels, it is important for kids to keep their minds sharp and their imaginations strong. This is why you should pack their favorite books or a handful of comics for them to read while your family is on the road. Harry Potter is still a favorite go-to book for a lot of kids as kids love to escape into the magical world of Hogwarts, and there are seven books to the series so this will keep them occupied on longer trips. Comics are another great avenue to keep kids reading, especially since the Marvel and DC films are so popular with the kids. There are plenty Marvel and DC kid-friendly comics on their favorite superheroes to keep their imaginations running during long-hour drives in the RV.

Coloring & Activity Books

Keeping your child’s mind active for cognitive development is important and coloring & activity books help to do just this. Activity books with mathematical practices and English-based activities will help your child focus on their learning while the adults can focus on driving the RV. Coloring and Activity books can be done in the RV during the drive or can be done at the camping destination while the adults are cooking or doing other chores. You can offer rewards for the children to complete a certain amount of activity pages while the adults finish their work, especially rewards centered on the trip such as a souvenir from a gift shop. There are many activity books that feature coloring activities centering on math, which helps them enjoy the process of learning.

Electronics & Learning Apps

There are so many electronic devices out there with learning apps that allow your children to learn while being entertained. There are learning-tablets for kids that feature science, math, and grammar lessons. These are definitely a must while on the road or camping. If you do not own the tablet, that is okay because there are many apps that you can download on your smart phone for learning.

Tips To Get You Moving Into Your Storage Space

Making sure your items are organized yet protected requires a mixture of creativity and detail: stacking boxes to keep fragile items on top; keeping things you may need sooner than later in the front; figuring out how to maximize your unit space with large appliances. Packing and moving is stressful enough without having to think about how best to secure your stuff and plan your storage unit move-in. Follow these seven tips to ease your mind and protect your belongings.

1. Boxes are better at living in Storage Units than plastic bags.

Sturdy & stack well, taking up less space, boxes are just better at keeping those photos from curling at the edges. Plus, sealed plastic bags can trap humidity. Damaging mildew is the last thing you want to worry about when returning to your belongings.

2. Baking Soda makes Appliances feel good.

3. Tag ‘em, Mark ‘em, Label ‘em. Boxes Need Names!

A sharpie pen will be your favorite gizmo during your home or business move. Remember to label them with helpful content references on every side of the box. Locating that can’t-do-without fairy cap will be so much faster. Plus when it’s time for your moving crew to work those heavy boxes into your new place, they can help you out by placing them in the appropriate room.

4. Bubble wrap saves things from cracking up.

Carefully swaddle fragile dinnerware, wine glasses, holiday ornaments, picture frames with bubble wrap individually to ensure protection. Next, pack them tightly into strong reinforced boxes such as plastic bins. Fill the gaps with scrunched paper, left over bubble wrap, air pillows or Styrofoam peanuts. You can even recycle old newspapers and old clothes as filler to add cushion support for your delicate artifacts.

5. Books are meant to be flat.

Those precious pages to distant adventures have delicate spines. Once the binding is damaged, the pages unravel swiftly. Older, antique books especially need extra care during packing. Lay your favorite books flat in moving boxes to prevent page bending and wear on book spines.

6. Make it an easy walk down the aisle.

7. Metal & oil can work together Tips on Storing Appliances in Storage Units

To stop rusting, grease your metal items like toaster ovens by wiping the metal areas with a bit of oil. This will keep them still usable when you’re ready to shift them out of storage.
