Prepare Your Boat for the Winter

Winter is coming and you may need to give your boat a little extra care and attention this time of year.  Boats are like instruments and they need proper care in order to function at their best.  Harsh winter weather can destroy the interior or exterior of your watercraft if it is not fully prepared.  To be sure your boat stays in shape for when the weather gets warm again, here are some tips for winterizing your boat.

Agua Dulce Storage rope

The best place for your boat to be during winter is out of the water and covered with a sturdy tarp or some other kind of cover.  Make a list concerning all of the steps you need to prepare the boat.  You should seek a professional if you have never winterized a boat or seek a friend who has experience.  Always seek professional help if you have no experience before you try winterizing your boat.  Here is a general guideline for areas of your boat that should be prepped for winter.  Other resources online will have more detailed information.

For the inboard engine, warm it up and drain the oil while it is still warm.  Change the oil filters, then flush the engine with fresh water.  Use a pickup hose from the water pump and circulate antifreeze through the manifold.  Start the engine and allow the antifreeze to circulate.  The water should exit the exhaust.  This whole process depends on whether you have a ‘raw water’ or an ‘enclosed fresh water’ cooling system.  Change the fluid in your transmission.  Spray fogging oil into each cylinder after removing the spark plugs.  Use either WD-40 or some fogging oil to wipe down the engine.

Another concern is the Stern Drive.  Remove any plants or barnacle that may have wound up in the lower unit.  Drain the gear case.  Check the oil for moisture.  If there is excessive moisture it could indicate that there are leaking seals that need to be repaired.  After removing plant life, clean the lower unit with soap and water.  Check the stern drive for cracks or pinholes if it has a rubber boot.  Check levels of fluids in hydraulic steering or lift pumps and grease all fittings.

Agua Dulce Storage dock

Now for the outboard engine.  Use flush muffs or the flushing port to flush the engine with fresh water.  Remove the cowl and start the engine, spraying fogging solution into the air intakes on the front of the engine.  Leave the engine running and remove the fuel line.  Continue spraying the solution until the engine dies.  Make sure to run the engine with the fuel line removed to burn all fuel from the carburetors.  Apply water resistant grease to propeller shaft and threads, then in the lower unit, change the gear oil.  Lubricate the exterior of the engine with polish and wash it down with soap and water, making sure to rinse completely.

You’ll also want to work on taking care of fuel, bilges, the fresh water system, the head, and the interior, depending on what your manufacturer says.  Also, whether you are storing your boat in the water or out of water matters.  You can check out http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/winteriz.htm to find more information on how to winterize depending on how you are storing your boat.  Remember to always consult your manual and a professional’s help before doing any work on your boat.

Benefits of Storing your RV at a Facility

Do you have an RV or plan on purchasing one in the future?  Have you thought about where to keep it while not being used?  There are many factors to consider when storing your recreational vehicle.  Many people simply do not have the garage or driveway space available, while others worry more about the safety of their vehicle.  Here are several reasons to consider storing your RV at an RV storage facility.

Agua Dulce Storage camera

Preventing theft

Storage facilities are designed to keep your vehicle safe, as most of the time they have fences and a security system.  These facilities often provide more protection than the average driveway.  Many RV storage locations are monitored 24 hours a day.  If you store at home, security is entirely up to you.  At a storage facility, you get electronic passcode entry, security cameras, locked fences, individual security unit alarms, and even on-site staff to keep an eye on things while you’re away.  Other perks besides security are sometimes washing stations, water for filling your tanks and a place to dump waste.

Agua Dulce Storage house

You don’t have space at home

Storing an RV at home can be tricky. Unless you have a very large garage, driveway or ample yard space, you might be restricted in your options.  A driveway is not the most convenient place to store your vehicle, however.  If your driveway connects to your garage, the RV will likely have to be moved out of the way to get anything in or out.  Many RVs won’t fit into a regular sized garage, and even then there is less space to keep other vehicles, or equipment often kept there.   Some people do not have the option of parking their RV on the street.   According to your local laws, you may be prevented from parking on the street.  Homeowners Associations and city ordinances can affect where you are allowed to keep your vehicle.  It’s possible you will not be allowed to keep it on the road or even next to your home.  You could park your vehicle in your backyard, but this takes space away from anything else you want to do in your yard, assuming you have the space to keep it there.  While it may be convenient in some ways, storing your RV at home may be at times very inconvenient.

Agua Dulce Storage no parking

Lots of options

No matter what size your recreational vehicle is, there is definitely a storage facility that can accommodate.  Outdoor facilities store your RV in an outdoor uncovered parking space with a security system.  This way there is no worrying whether or not your RV will fit into a storage unit.  This option is usually the most affordable.  Some facilities, however, do offer indoor options if that is what you prefer.  Although, normally this option can be a bit more expensive.

You may only want to rent a space for certain times of the year when you aren’t using your vehicle.  There are plenty of RV storage locations that offer month to month leases so you can take your RV for long trips or if you decide you no longer need to store your RV at a facility.

Beginner: Different RV Trailer Types

So you want to go on your first RV expedition but haven’t got a clue which RV trailer you’d like to buy. If that sounds about right, then you’ve come to the right article. Whether you’re planning a family weekend camping trip or a weekend getaway with some buddies, it’s important to figure out which trailer is right for you. Keep in mind that there are a lot of different types of travel RVs. I’ve compiled a list of travel RV’s to make your RV decision making the process a whole lot easier!  Let’s get started!

Agua Dulce Storage expandable trailers

Expandable Trailers

These trailers are probably the most versatile travel trailers available in today’s market. The expandable travel trailers are essentially a hybrid between a pop-up camper and a traditional travel trailer. This kind of trailer will look like a travel trailer on the road but don’t be fooled when you arrive at the campsite! Once parked, these trailers can provide extra sleeping quarters as it unfolds. In newer models with more customizable features, you’ll gain even more space and comfort. You can think of these “unfolds” as like slide outs. The best part is that these trailers can be towed by regular vehicles such as a family car, minivan, SUV or pickup truck. In short, if you’re planning a weekend camping trip with family and friends, I highly recommend the teardrop.

Agua Dulce Storage teardrop trailers

Teardrop Trailers

These fun-sized trailers are just plain fun to camp in! These teardrops trailers can be towed by almost any vehicle due to their small stature. They’re also very lightweight with excellent aerodynamics making it one of the most fuel-efficient trailers in the market. You don’t need to own a large SUV or a truck to tow this bad boy. All you would need is a functioning vehicle and a hitch. What really sets the teardrop trailers apart from the others are their ability to go almost anywhere your vehicle can. This allows for more aggressive adventuring. If paired with an all-terrain vehicle, you’re looking at an interesting camping story. In short, if you’re about the minimalistic, frugal, and aesthetic lifestyle, I highly recommend the teardrop.

Agua Dulce Storage fifth wheel trailers

Fifth Wheel Trailer

Don’t be alarmed by its name! I’m not talking about that one friend who tags along with your double date. I’m talking about a type of trailer that has the same benefits and features as a house on wheels. This type of trailer is amazing for weekend trips with a large family or a group of friends. These trailers range anywhere between 20 to 50 feet long and can weight up to 10,000 pounds. Because of this, it’s important to consider the horsepower of your truck to maximize safety and towing capacity. It’s also equally important to get the right kind of hitch when towing a fifth wheeler. Once you’re all set to hit the camps, you’ll be in for a luxurious experience. Camping in a fifth wheel means you’ll be camping luxuriously meaning you’ll enjoy comfortable living quarters and the convenience of a bathroom. In short, if you like camping in luxury, I highly recommend the fifth wheeler.

Where Should You Store Your Recreational Vehicle (RV)

There aren’t a lot of options when it comes to storing your RV. In fact, there are really only two viable options when it comes to storing your RV investment. The first option would be your home, and that’s assuming you have enough garage space, driveway space or even backyard. The second option would notably be an RV Storage Facility. Let’s get started and figure out which option would be best for you!

Agua Dulce Storage mini camper

While home storage is probably one of the most convenient ways to go about storing your investments, this only really applies to smaller RVs such as mini campers or small Class B RVs. Although this method of storage is great for smaller RVs, it’ll also take up a lot of space in the garage, driveway, and perhaps even the backyard. If stored in the garage that would mean you would have less space for lawnmowers, bikes, equipment, and possibly even a car. On top of that, getting the RV in and out of the garage may pose additional problems especially if you have a small garage like mine. Then there’s the option of parking your RV in the driveway. Driveway RV parking may pose more of a hassle especially if your driveway connects to your garage. That’ll also mean you’d have less driveway space for other vehicles in the household. The last option of parking your RV in your backyard seems to be the best one. However, that’s assuming you have a big enough backyard. That would also mean no more backyard barbeques let alone have a backyard. Storing your RV at home is definitely the most convenient way to go, but it also comes with the price of inconveniencing everyday life.

Agua Dulce Storage camper

Storing your recreational vehicle at an RV storage facility is one of the best methods of storage. Most RV storage facilities are at a secured location that’s monitored 24 hours a day so there’s no real need to worry about someone trying to break in. Although having a peace of mind with top-notch security is important, that’s not all that RV storage facilities have to offer. Some RV storage facilities have other perks and amenities such as water for filling your tanks, wash and vacuum stations, dumping and more! Let’s just say that RV storage lacked the home storage accessible convenience but it makes up for what it lacks with the convenience of RV maintenance. If you think top-notch security and RV amenities is everything that an RV storage facility has to offer, guess again. RV storage facilities have a unique take on storing your RV investments. Most facilities will provide you storage options such as uncovered RV storage, covered RV storage, and enclosed RV storage! So what’s the difference? An uncovered RV storage is essentially like parking your RV in your driveway or backyard, only that you’ll have the added top-notch security. This method of storage is usually the most affordable means of storage. The covered RV storage is like having a protective roof over it. It won’t block out all the weather but it’ll give you adequate protection against the elements. This method of storage is slightly more costly than the uncovered. The enclosed RV storage is by far the most protection you’ll receive when it comes to RV storage protection. A fully enclosed RV storage means your RV will be fully enclosed and protected inside a container. This method is also the most expensive but you can be reassured that it’ll extend the longevity of your RV.

Tips For Camping with Your RV

RVs are more popular than ever and now that it’s summer, it’s time to drive yours out of storage and into a beautiful mountain campsite.  But although you may have had your RV or travel trailer for years, it can sometimes be tricky to remember the important details to plan for before and during your trip.  Here are a few tips to keep in mind when you are planning your next RV trip.  There may be other helpful articles online as well so make sure to look those up too.

One of the first things to remember is to pack properly and make sure all of the systems in the RV are in working order.  Bring a first aid kit.  Customize the kit to fit whatever activities you may be doing, or per your particular location.

Bring  tools and spare parts along with you.  A diverse tool kit can help you in many situations, as well as any spare parts you may need while out in the wilderness, such as spare light bulbs, fuses, nuts, and bolts.  Always be prepared for any repairs you may need to make.  It may also be a good idea to label all of your appliances with the number of amps. You should know your electrical load, so that you don’t run too many appliances at once.

Agua Dulce Storage motorhome

Make checklists for all the things you want to bring, including food, parts, and any other supplies.

Be sure to check tire pressure before leaving and throughout your trip.  Weigh your rig after it is loaded to be sure you aren’t carrying too much and on all four corners to be sure there is balance.

Remember to secure all of your items before you leave.  You may hit a bump in the road and if certain items, such as kitchen items, aren’t secured you could end up with a mess.

Check the weather and road conditions of your route before heading out as well.  You may decide to take a different way if there is any dangerous weather or if traffic is better on another road.

Make a checklist for when you get there and go through the important steps:

Beforehand, make sure your rig will fit the campsite. Also, be sure your RV is able to get to the campsite via the roads.  Some roads can be difficult to navigate.

Agua Dulce Storage path

Locate the water, electrical, and sewage hookups.

You’ll also need to level and stabilize your RV, if yours doesn’t have a self-leveling  system.  There are guides you can find online that teach you to do this.  Leveling is important to the proper operations of certain appliances, and stabilizing is necessary so that your rig won’t sway when you move around in it.

How Millennials Are Saving the RV Industry

When you’re out and about this summer, take a look at how many RVs and trailers are around.  You might be a little surprised.  Ever wonder why there are suddenly so many recreational vehicles on the road compared to just a few years ago?  You can thank a big part of it to millennials.  Yes, that’s right.  Millennials are helping drive RV sales in the last year, and the industry is continuing to grow.  What was once an industry propelled by mainly retirees is now experiencing a resurgence as a result of more and more young people investing in the RV lifestyle.  In 2017, RV sales went up 17.2 percent from 2016!  According to the RV Industry Association, December of 2017 was the best December ever recorded in regards to the number of vehicles shipped to dealers.  Baby Boomers retiring and travelling the country more, along with more young couples buying RVs, have been driving sales in recent years.  Manufacturers expect the numbers to be even higher this year, overall.

But who exactly are a part of the millennial generation?  They are anyone born between 1981 and 1996. They are the men and women who are at the forefront of our technological advancement.  In addition to paving this generation’s technological growth, they’re also adventure seekers at heart who love exploration.  In the past, RV traveling was once known only to retirees because obtaining financial stability was only available at a stationary position.  With a bit of help from modern technology, millennials now have the ability to work remotely.  Now, for the million dollar question:  why are millennials driving  RV sales up?

A big reason for the increase in the number of RVs sold in recent years may be that modern RVs have more features than ever before, making them more home-like,  comfortable, and spacious than previous RV models.  Newer, more hi-tech models have Wi-Fi hot spots and built in wireless networks, as many campgrounds now offer Wi-Fi.  There are many types of RVs that are compatible with phones and apps to run different components of your trailer, such as your AC or awning, while others have built in TVs and fireplaces.  With technology as it is today, many people are now able to work remotely from their computers.  As long as there is an internet connection, those who wish to are able to work wherever they may be.

It’s also been widely asserted the millennial generation is much more experience driven than the generations before them.  Younger people, even those with families, are more motivated to spend money on experiences or travelling rather than material items.  Many young, first-time buyers want to bring along a trailer or motor-home on their vacations.  But even still, others simply want a more unconventional way of life.  Since millennials are the younger generation in the workforce, some would like to save money and travel while deciding where they may want to live permanently.  A lot of manufacturers offer basic, affordable RVs and trailers that are lightweight, making it a great option for road trips or living on a budget.  There is an abundance of options nowadays, making it easier to choose an RV, trailer or motor-home that fits your needs, your budget, and your lifestyle.

Motorhome or Travel Trailer?

Purchasing an RV can be a major financial investment, and the decision to buy brings up a lot of questions – the first of which is “motorhome or travel trailer?” If you’re stumped and can’t seem to make up your mind, you’ve come to the right article! I’ve compiled a list of ownership pros and cons for both the motorhome and travel trailer. Keep in mind that both are great options and that it all depends on your needs and wants. Let’s go!

Agua Dulce Storage travel trailer

The Upfront Cost

There is a huge price difference between the motorhome and the travel trailer. We’re going to assume we’re comparing a new motorhome with a new travel trailer or a used motorhome with a used travel trailer. With this comparison, a class C motorhome will most likely cost two times the average cost of a travel trailer. Generally speaking, travel trailers are significantly lower in cost than motorhomes. However, though travel trailers are more affordable than motorhomes, travel trailers are dependent upon a vehicle. The ideal vehicle would most likely be a truck.

Agua Dulce Storage motorhome

Ongoing Maintenance

As you’d expect, the ongoing maintenance of a class C motorhome tend to be higher than a travel trailer. The simple reason for the price difference is because the motorhome has both the RV components and the vehicle components such as the engine and etc. Depending on how often you use the motorhome the cost of maintenance can cost anywhere between $50-$200 dollars per month. Whereas the travel trailer can cost anywhere between $1-$50 dollars a month, give or take.

Cost of Gasoline

When it comes to the cost of gasoline, it largely depends on the size of the motorhome as well as the cost of fuel. When comparing a class C motorhome with a truck towed travel trailer the motorhome would be more fuel efficient.

Depreciation and Vehicle Resale Value

Vehicles, in general, are not good investments because once it leaves the sales lot, the vehicle beings to depreciate. However, when we look at travel trailers, you may experience a slower depreciation because it doesn’t have an engine or various vehicle parts.

Travel Frequency

How often do you plan on hitting the road? Are you planning on traveling full-time or part-time? These are important questions to maximize your investment as well as your decision. If you plan on traveling part-time during the weekends or during annual vacations, it may be a big investment for a motorhome if it’s only going to be used a few weeks out of the year.

Driving Experience

When it comes to the all-in-one class C motorhome, driving is a lot more comfortable and less stressful. The motorhome is relatively easier to drive than pulling the travel trailer with a truck. One key difference between the motorhome and the travel trailer is the driving speed. When making corner turns or driving downhill, it’s a bit stressful for travel trailers since you’ll have to consider both the truck as well as the trailer.

Living Space and Storage

The class C motorhome will have a smaller and more confined living quarters than the travel trailer. One major decider between the two is the average number of passengers you’ll be housing during your trips. If space is a concern, I’d recommend visiting a local RV dealership to get a better size idea.

Tips to Consider for a Memorable Road Trip

It’s about that time of the year to pull your RV out of storage, pack your friends and hit the open road!

Agua Dulce Storage sign

There’s nothing quite like wind blowing through your hair as you cruise down Route 66 in your RV. Or facing the open road and getting lost in thought with the surrounding scenery. There’s also something amazing about road trips that invoke a sense of freedom and excitement. It’s also a great way to gain a new perspective and a deeper appreciation of oneself. So before we dive right into the trip, there are a few things to consider before we set our sights on the open road. As most RV travelers would say, “preparation is key to any successful road trip.” Read on for a few ways you can ensure a memorable road trip.Agua Dulce Storage map

The Plan

There are typically two types of road trip plans: the detailed plan and the vague plan. Depending on whichever plan you’re looking to partake, it’s important that everyone onboard has the same expectation. You wouldn’t want unnecessary drama to abrupt during the trip. An example of a detailed plan consists of having a set schedule for both departure and arrival along with proper campsite reservations booked far in advance. An example of a vague plan would consist of multiple spontaneous pit stops along the trip. In short, a vague plan is basically winging it as you go with the destination in mind.

The RV

A successful road trip is only as good as your RV. So before you set your sights on the open road, be sure to double check the condition of your rig. What I mean by this is to check the health of your RV before you set out on your adventure. Keep in mind; you’re most likely going to put in a couple hundred miles on your RV if not more. So definitely consider double checking your engine oil, tire pressure, lights, battery, and brakes to name a few. In case of a flat tire or an unexpected engine occurrence, always make sure you have a functioning spare tire, jumper cables, and tools if you know your way around an engine.

The Food

Ah yes! The most important part of the entire trip! Depending on the number of passengers, you’re already looking at a pretty packed RV. When an RV has limited storage space like this, it’s going to take a certain level of creativity to figure out additional storage space. Fortunately, there are easy storage hacks you can do to maximize your space. If you got soda cans or canned foods, one of the best methods save space is to use storage bins or corrals to help uniformly store circular items. Another iffy storage hack is to use the inside of cabinet doors to hang spices or small lightweight items.

Boredom Busters

Being together in a confined space for hours on end will eventually drive you mad! So brace yourselves for boredom! But don’t worry you won’t be suffering from boredom alone, whether it’s with friends or family you’re all going to be bored of out your minds together! Rather than going mad together, why not play the singing game! It’s where one person starts singing the first line of the song and the next person has to continue it! Another game is the movie game, where one person names an actor or actress and the next person has to name a movie they were in.

The Right Time to Travel in Your Recreational Vehicle (RV)

If you’re like most people, you’re probably working at a location-dependent job. If this is the case, you’re likely in a weekly rinse and repeat work cycle. Most people will understand this feeling to a degree because they’re either living it right now or have experienced it. So when exactly will you have the freedom to travel? Sorry to break it to you but there is no “right time” to travel. Before we begin this article, I’d like to share one of my favorite inspirational quotes.

“There’s never a right time to travel in our lives. When we’re young, we have the energy and time, but not the means. When we are middle-aged, we have the means and the energy, but not the time. When we are old, we have the time and the means, but not the energy.”

This quote puts life in perspective and helps you realize that no matter when we decide to travel in our lives, there’s always going to be some kind of sacrifice. If you’re young, you’d have to be willing to take financial risks. If you’re middle-aged with a family, you’d have to risk your job security. Lastly, when you’re old you run the risk of your physical well-being. There isn’t a “right time” to travel. However, your Recreational Vehicle (RV) might be a possible solution to this dilemma.

map-2562138_960_720

When it comes to packing up your life and hitting the open road in your RV, there are a few reasons why it isn’t for everyone. In fact, the RV life was only known and seen for those who were retired. Nowadays, people of all ages can become full-time RV go-getters. This is only made possible by the ever-growing demand of the internet. This new job demand helped create new jobs that weren’t available back then but are now. They enabled people of all working ages to self-sustain themselves on their RV traveling adventures. The once known “RV dream” to retirees is now possible for those willing to accept this lifestyle.

geography-2561674_960_720

A study was conducted by the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) to determine the typical age of RV owners in the US. The study concluded that the age bracket fell between the ages of thirty-five (35) and fifty-four (54). In other words, we’re looking at a new era of traveling and living. So how do we make a living when traveling? Well, one of the best methods of funding your traveling expenses is free-lance jobs. The best part about these free-lance jobs is that it only requires internet access. Nowadays you can easily equip and install an internet source to your rig.

travel-2650303_960_720

One of the most versatile types of jobs out there that allow for a steady income while traveling in an RV is telecommuting home-based type jobs. To name just a few, there’s web design, photographer, software engineer, and writer. All these positions can be performed remotely in the comfort of your RV. Aside from telecommuting type jobs, there are other job positions out there that require you to travel the distance to the work itself. These types of work are typically within the engineering and construction industry. For example, you might be located 3 to 6 months away from home. Some of these travel type job positions include field technicians, geologist, consultant, and environmental specialist to name a few. Lastly, there are Temporary Staffing Agencies that can help find you a suitable job for your traveling expenses. These positions are typically seasonal jobs. For example, Amazon usually hires a large number of seasonal workers to help package orders during the Christmas rush.

auto-2583303_960_720

RV traveling has slowly evolved over the years with the advancement of technology. Regardless of how advanced technology may become in the distant future, there will always be a time and place where sacrifices are tested. Remember, life is filled with decisions and risks. Are you ready to make the decision to pull your RV out of storage and take that risk?

RV Storage at Home vs. Storage Facility

Before we dive right in, I want to be completely transparent and one hundred percent honest with you guys: in this comparison, I’m most likely going to be biased in favor of storage facilities. Frankly, because I, myself use a storage facility. With that said, this comparison will be strictly composed of my own personal experience as well as my own opinion about home storage versus a storage facility.

Let’s get started! RV storage facilities provide an easy solution for people who want to enjoy an adventurous lifestyle without the hassle of sacrificing their garage space. Although many people have managed to store their RV’s at home, there are some unique features that a storage facility offers that our homes most likely does not. Here is my list of reasons.

Agua Dulce Storage map

More Room

Generally speaking, storing an RV at home can be a little tricky. Depending on the size of your RV or the size of your garage, you may face some difficulties such as not having a big enough garage or backyard. For the average RV owner, most household garages are not built to store our RVs. However, most households do have a big enough backyard to park their RV. Now there is an alternative parking solution and that would be to park in your driveway. But that is of course if you don’t mind parking in and out of the driveway every single day. And if you’re wondering if you could Street Park, think again! There’s a homeowners association that doesn’t allow RV street parking.

Agua Dulce Storage road

More Security

Before we get into this topic, I’m not implying that your home isn’t safe or secure. I’m just saying that storage facilities are designed for security and they pride themselves on protecting their tenant’s assets. Whereas at home, any security measures you want taken are entirely up to you. At a storage facility, you’ll most likely receive a few if not all of these features such as an electronic passcode for your unit, security cameras, locked gates, individual unit security alarms, and even on-site staff to keep an eye on things while you’re away. Now, these are just a few of the features that a storage facility has to offer.

More Protection

As an RV owner, I can say with the utmost confidence that RVs are pretty sturdy and are built to withstand most elements. However, even the mightiest can fall when they’re not properly maintained or protected. This is especially true when we’re talking about our RVs. Depending on our geographical location, we may be more susceptible to high humidity, rainfall, snow or various other extreme elemental concerns. I highly recommend using a storage facility during the off-season such as winter if you live in a colder region. Protect your RV from the elements with an in-door storage unit. Now to be fair, an in-door storage unit is a bit pricier but the investment is well worth it in the long run.

Like many of us, we only whip out our RVs from our storage facility or from our backyard when we plan on going on an adventure. Generally speaking, my family and I only travel to a handful of our favorite destinations every few months or so. Needless to say, RV owners have the opportunity to explore new places without spending a lot of money on travel expenses while enjoying a level of comfort similar to their own home.
