Inspection

You will want to inspect your tires at various intervals to ensure they are in good shape, and to spot any early dry rot symptoms. However, you need to know exactly what to look for. Check for brittleness in your tires because they will begin to lose moisture and the rubber will start to separate from the tire. You will also look for cracks in the sidewall and tread.

If it has cracks, this may affect the way the trailer drives and it’s overall handling, even if the depth of the tread is still great. Therefore you need to have them analyzed by a professional to see if they are salvageable, otherwise prepare to buy new tires soon. Tires that are experiencing dry rot often start to fade in color. They go from black to a more grey hue. It’s possible to start noticing fading before the cracking appears.

Storage

It goes without saying that where and how you store your trailer will have an effect on whether or not your trailer develops dry rot and flats spots. Trailers that are stored uncovered and outdoors, will stand a greater chance of developing dry rot due to the damage caused by UV rays.

Like our skin, tires can get dried out and damaged from the sun. The other elements in a seasonal climate will also have an effect. Therefore, it’s recommended that a UV protectant cover be used for both trailers and tires when it’s in storage. This is especially beneficial if the trailer will be in storage for extended periods. If getting UV covers is not an option at this time, you can try parking in shaded areas as much as possible.

In regards to flat spots, it is recommended to raise your trailer off the ground. This is especially beneficial if the trailer won’t be in use for a few months. This is will prevent the tires from constantly being pressured unto hot asphalt or concrete. You can jack up the trailer completely or roll the wheels over plywood to keep them from contacting the ground directly.  As a matter of fact, if the trailer will not be used for several months to a year, you can remove the tires altogether and store them in a cool dry place.

Tire Inflation

Some people under-inflate their tires in an attempt to get a smoother ride because overinflated tires tend to enhance every blip and bumps in the road. However, it is best to inflate the tires to the recommended levels to avoid premature wear and tear. While the trailer is not in use, you should still check the tires’ air pressure occasionally and keep them properly inflated to promote durability.

Cleaning

You may clean your tires as a part of your regular trailer cleaning routine, but if your trailer is in storage or not being used regularly, now is not the time to be using fancy chemicals to achieve “the look”. That black, new tire look that can carry off the appeal of the entire trailer is desirable, but the focus should remain simple. All you need for cleansing is water and a mild detergent, such as dishwashing liquid. Dishwashing liquids are typically water-based and do not have added chemicals that may degrade the materials and compounds of the tire. You only need to wash them with the detergent and rinse with regular temperature water. The reason to avoid fancy cleaners and cleaning products, is to completely avoid those that may possibly include petroleum-based components. These components can lead to degradation of the weathering elements in the rubber, which would make it more susceptible to the elements and dry rot

Weight Capacity

Trailers tires are made specifically for trailers and will indicate a maximum load capacity. This capacity would factor in the weight of the trailer itself as well as whatever it is carrying. If you overload the trailer and by extension, the tires, then you will be applying too much pressure, which can be damaging. This can be even more so if the trailer is left stationary for months with the attached overweight. This will quickly increase the chances of cracking and flat spots.

If it’s not possible to remove the extra weight or all the weight during storage, you should attempt to move the trailer in 12-week intervals to shift the pressure from one specific spot on the tire. This way the weight can be distributed and allow for a more even wear.

Good Tires

It goes without saying that you should have good tires to begin with. Try to get tires that are specifically made for trailers. You can find out from your retailer or check the sidewall of your tire for additional details. Aside from the capacity or load weight, the tire’s sidewall can also tell you the dimensions of the tire and what they should be used for. Trailer tires are made differently with reinforced sidewalls because trailers often carry weight. Therefore, the tires have to be able to handle the weight and still drive well. They may also be equipped with improved tread compound to provide additional resistance to rolling, which can be very handy on certain terrains.

Drive about an hour north from downtown Los Angeles and you will enter a whole different world – not just figuratively, but very much visually. Any visitor should marvel at Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park on first sight, and then quickly realize the jagged sandstone rocks are rather familiar.

It’s not your mind playing tricks on you. The scenic area has indeed served as a set for more than a few big budget Hollywood blockbusters. After all, the unique rock formation looks out of this world, like the landscape of Mars or some other distant planet.

Vasquez Rocks are located right off the Antelope Valley Freeway north of Santa Clarita and just before the Palmdale, in an Old West town called Agua Dulce. Although its remote, the area is still within Los Angeles County. The park is roughly 900 acres carved out of the Sierra Pelona Mountains. It was named after a 18th century bandito, Tiburcio Vasquez.  

The term “runaway production” came about in Hollywood more than a decade ago, when studios set up shop in Canada, New Zealand and other far-flung places to take advantage of financial incentives. However, studios were enamored with Vasquez Rocks since the 1920s, and the area is truly one of a kind.

Over at IMDB, no less than 414 films and TV shows are tied to Vasquez Rocks. Here are some titles across the past century that you’ve probably seen – or may want to check out.  

Star Trek

Star Trek has a long and prodigious association with Vasquez Rocks, so much so that it has earned the nickname “Kirk’s Rock.” Showrunner Gene Roddenberry turned to the sandstone rock landscape to serve as the dramatic backdrop for the battle between Capt. James T. Kirk and Gorn, the villainous green lizard in an episode titled “Arena.” In another episode, titled “Friday’s Child,” Vasquez Rocks became the planet Capella IV, where Kirk and Dr. McCoy assisted the birth of a warrior prince.

Crews returned to film the Star Trek motion picture reboot in 2009 and a Big Bang Theory episodes revolving around Trekkies was shot at Vasquez to pay homage.

Werewolf of London

Before the jagged Vasquez Rocks became synonymous with Star Trek, they were used to depict Tibet in the horror classic film Werefolf of London. The 1935 release featured the location at the center of Dr. Glendon’s botanical voyage. After being attacked by a wild animal, Glendon returned to London a changed man. He turned into a werewolf at night and became a menace to the city. 

The Flintstones

The live action version of The Flintstones provided plenty of gaggles to audiences upon release in 1994. But, how many were able to figure out that the Bed Rock in the film was actually Vasquez Rocks? Anchored by a hilarious performance from John Goodman as Fred Flintstone, the location served as more than an ideal setting for the portrayal of Stone Age in the comedy blockbuster.

Blazing Saddles

The Vasquez Rocks etched a reputation as the studios’ go-to for more than a few B-movie westerns in the 40s and 50s. Everything from Gunsmoke, Bonanza to Laredo and The High Chapparal were filmed there. The “typecasting” eventually led to the filmmakers of Blazing Saddles, the Western spoof released in 1974, deciding to use the locale.

Alpha Dog

In the modern era, the based-on-a-true-story crime film Alpha Dog used the Vasquez Rocks for the most dramatic part of the story. The ensemble cast featuring Justin Timberlake, Emile Hirsch, Bruce Willis and more was about a teen abducted and held for random by drug dealers. We won’t play spoiler, but let’s just say that the film sequence shot in Vasquez Rocks at night proved haunting and pivotal to the plot.

Hot Shots! Part Deux

Charlie Sheen and Lloyd Bridges brought their comedic chops to the “Rambo” parody. Sheen’s Topper Harley led a rescue team into Iraq to retrieve Iraqi war prisoners and everyone who tried to rescue them.

Zorro

The fictional Hollywood character Zorro was based on Tiburcio Vasquez, the outlaw who eventually became the namesake of the Vasquez Rocks, her reported hideaway. In a 1957 Zorro episode, Annette Funicello met the bandit at the rocks.

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery

Proving Vasquez popularity across the “pond” Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery was shot on location. The hilarious Mike Myers character made his foray into the landscape in his British flag-painted Jaguar drop-top.  

Wild Wild West

First came “The Wild Wild West,” which was filmed at Vasquez Rocks from 1965-1969. In 1999, director Barry Sonnenfeld’s “Wild Wild West” featuring Will Smith and Kevin Kline came back to the rocks. The hilarious adventure took advantage of the Vasquez Rocks landscape throughout the film, transporting the audience to the Old West.

Dante’s Peak

It’s not hard to imagine the Vasquez Rocks formation as part of the set for “Dante’s Peak.” The disaster thriller starring Pierce Brosnan, who played James Bond, and Linda Hamilton, whose “Terminator” role was career-defining, was set in a fictional town of Dante’s Peak. Its residents had to escape a sudden volcano eruption. “Dante’s Peak” was released by Universal Pictures and Pacific Western Productions in 1997.

The A-Team

Talk about a wild ride. On the 1986 episode titled “Wheel of Fortune,” the A-Team’s Murdock wins big at the game thanks to Face’s letter frequency research. Face helps pull him out of the asylum and plans to head to Hawaii as one of the prizes. The twist comes when Murdock is kidnapped and the team has to head on a CIA mission to Baraq in South America to steal a Russian chopper. Vasquez Rocks has prominent appearance in the episode. 

Hail, Caesar!

The 2016 black comedy film starring Josh Brolin filmed a western sequence at the Vasquez Rocks. The film’s premise is a fictional story that follows the real-life fixer Eddie Mannix working in 1950s Hollywood Mannix attempts to trace the whereabouts of a cast member who disappeared during the filming of Bible-themed epic feature film.

First on our list is the Big Sky Movie Ranch. It’s located in Simi Valley, also home to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. Even though there are not many traditional Western films being made today, this ranch was the main location for many of the most popular Western films and TV shows of all time. Big Sky Movie Ranch was home to Bonanza, Gunsmoke, and Rawhide. Even if you have never watched any of these TV Shows, you have no doubt heard their names or at least heard the Bonanza theme song being overused in later films. Other titles that you have probably heard are The Thorn Birds and Westworld, but the most famous of them all is most likely The Little House on the Prairie.

Corriganville Movie Ranch

Also located in Simi Valley was the Corriganville Movie Ranch. It was located in an area called the Santa Susana Pass, which was previously named Simi Pass. The pass is surrounded by a vast mountainside filled with rocks and shrubs making it a perfect scene for some western movies. The ranch is now a national park operated by Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District, but there are still some foundations from the early movie sets and appropriate scenery that could still make it a good location given that you receive permission to film. If you are not familiar with Western movies that were made in the 40s such as the Range Busters franchise, then you may not be aware of why this area is famous, but back in those days, it was a prime western filming location.

Melody Ranch

Melody Ranch is located in Santa Clarita Valley, where it offers a well-equipped motion picture studio and museum tours. It’s perfect for shooting that classic western scene complete with the town and main street style seen in every western film. It’s generally flanked with swing-door saloons, a bank, a jail, a sheriff’s office, and at least one white wooden church. This is an old western setup and the Melody Ranch provides it all, along with props and production facilities. Some famous films from this location include Django, Wyatt Earp, and The Lone Ranger.

Blue Cloud Movie Ranch

The Blue Cloud Movie Ranch or BCMR for short is also located in that prime Santa Clarita filming area. The BCMR ranch houses numerous buildings and scenes that can be used for various film productions. Albeit not Western films, the ranch has been used for productions such as NCIS and American Sniper. However, their “Lower Thirty” open land or “Mountainside Amphitheater” sets could be ideal for a classic or modern western film backdrop. Kill Bill Church

The Sanctuary Adventist Church in Lancaster, California, is a very popular and infamous filming location. It’s more commonly known as “The Kill Bill Church.” If you have never seen the cult classic Kill Bill from Quentin Tarantino, we won’t give you any spoilers, but we will say that it involves Uma Thurman, a wedding dress, guns, and some really great fighting scenes (with a sword no less). Even though it is most known for Kill Bill, this location has appeared in other films including Crossroads with Britney Spears, Inferno with Jean-Claud Van Damme, and another movie starring Robert De Niro. While you can definitely utilize the church into a modern Western film, the external areas may also draw your attention with a single Joshua tree just out front and the surrounding desert lands.

Rancho Deluxe

Rancho Deluxe is another Southern California location to shoot a western film or TV show. It has a dedicated Western town with various internal and external set styles. Their location is extremely versatile and has been used for TV shows such as Shooter, NCIS, Sons of Anarchy, and many more. They have also been in feature films such as Iron Man 3, Rush Hour 3, and Bad Teacher. They even have commercials and music videos done by well-known artists including Eminem, CeeLo Green, Bruno Mars, and Travis Scott.

Diamond V Ranch

The Diamond V Ranch allows you to shoot a classic or modern Western film or TV show. Their Wilderness Area would be ideal to adjust to the Western style. Polsa Rosa Ranch

The Polsa Rosa Ranch, located in Acton, California, is just south of the Antelope Valley and the northern outskirts of Los Angeles County. It boasts 750 acres of shooting areas and borders the Angeles National Forrest, and it runs along the Santa Clara River. While it may not have been used typically for Western projects, the vast landscape can be adjusted to fit a modern western or an old western set. Golden Oak Ranch

The Golden Oak Ranch is located in the Santa Clarita Valley and is more of a modern-day ranch setting.
